The video layers impressions from a granddaughter and accounts of her
grandmother with images of staircases and garden gates. Creating a picture
that is both homogenous and fragmented it juxtaposes personal memories
and experiences with everyday environments. Staircases have been a recurring
element in the trajectory of this Wienese Jewish family, and continue
to trigger memories over several generations. The grandmother came to
London on the last Kindertransport, whilst her mother and twin sister,
the writer Ilse Eichinger, survived in Wienna.
